How to Temporarily Fix a Leaking Pipe

Youve found that you have a leaking pipe, but its not practical to carry out a permanent fix. What can you do? Luckily, it is quite easy to temporarily fix the problem until youre able to call us at Plumbers Chelsea for a permanent repair. Before you begin, make sure you locate the water supply to the pipe and turn it off. There are two ways you can temporarily fix a leaking pipe. The first, and perhaps the easiest, is to take a piece of standard garden hose, large enough in diameter to go around the pipe. Simply place the piece of hose over the damaged area of the pipe and hold into place with 3 jubilee clips. Tighten the clips so that the hose becomes sealed against the pipe.Or, you could use epoxy putty. Epoxy putty is a mix, which comes in two parts and hardens as it dries. It will adhere to most metal as long as the metal is clean and dry. Therefore, its very important that you thoroughly clean and dry the affected area of the pipe before applying the epoxy. At Plumbers Chelsea, we suggest cleaning the affected section of pipe with emery paper. Once youre satisfied that the pipe is completely clean and dry, simply mix the two parts of the putty together, place it on the area of the leak and smooth it out with a small knife. Be sure to check the directions to determine how thick the epoxy should be applied and how long it takes to dry.Either of these fixes will work to fix the leaking pipe temporarily, but its important to have the leak repaired permanently. If youre familiar with plumbing, you can do this yourself by cutting out the damaged section of pike and replacing it. If youre not familiar with plumbing, give us a call at Plumbers Chelsea and well be happy to help.
